We Family of 3 was planning a trip to Leh Ladakh, booking a good taxi and driver was our priority. We looked at the reviews about taxi and found a very good write up about one Mr "Delek", his real name is Tashi Delek, Phone number is 9419331805/9622167841. We called him and fixed the taxi for 5 days including picking up from the airport and Drop, Local site seeing in Lek, Visit to Nubra Valley and Penagong. He quoted very reasonable price, less than all other enquiry we made. His service was excellent, he has a Toyota Cresta vehicle very well maintained, he knows the places and very good guide himself. How To Get Inner line Permit?

What is Inner line Permit?

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is an official travel document issued and stamped by the Indian authorities. This document is compulsory to visit Restricted Areas. Permits are delivered by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Leh, they are valid for a maximum period of 15 days for foreigners and for a maximum period of 3 weeks for Indian citizens (you can specify the dates when the validity period starts and ends). There is no limit on the number of times you enter a Restricted Area. The Inner Line Permit is called Protected Area Permit when delivered to foreigners (but it is the same).

What Are Restricted Areas?

The Restricted Areas are located near the Line of Control (border with Pakistan) and the Line of Actual Control (border with China). There are several check posts on the roads leading to these areas. You need an Inner Line Permit to visit the following places: Khardung La Pass, Nubra Valley and Shayok Chang La Pass, Tangtse and Pangong Lake Chumathang, Tsaga La and Tso Moriri Lake Dha-Hanu Valley and Batalik You do not need an Inner Line Permit to travel along the Leh-Manali Road and the Leh-Srinagar Road, but the contribution to the Ecology Contribution Fund is required.

How to obtain an Inner Line Permit?

It is very easy to obtain an Inner Line Permit when you are in Leh:
1. Allow one working day for your application to be processed; in general, it takes only a few hours or less.
2. The permit office is open Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays too in spring & summer.
3. Indian citizens need to provide a valid identity proof (driving license, passport, election card, aadhar card, pan card).
4. Foreigners need to provide a valid passport with visa or OCI card.
5. Check the latest rules with the DC office.

How Much Does It cost?

The cost breakdown of an Inner Line Permit is as follows:
Environment fee: ₹ 400
Red Cross donation: ₹ 50
Total cost: ₹ 450/person
There is also a small processing fee of ₹ 150 unless you go to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office by yourself to get the permit stamped.

Special cases

Visitors from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Myanmar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will not be able to obtain a permit from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Leh. They will have to apply for an Inner Line Permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
Foreigners holding a diplomatic passport and members of the United Nations will have to apply for an Inner Line Permit from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Leh Palace
Preventing altitude sickness in Ladakh

Ladakh lies at an elevation over 3,000 metres above sea level. The altitude must be carefully taken into account when planning a trip in the region to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) which is also called altitude sickness.
Most tourists reach Ladakh by air and they land at Leh airport. The elevation of Leh (the capital of Ladakh) is 3,500 metres above sea level and you must take 2 days of acclimatization at this height before going to higher altitude. Some of the top attractions in Ladakh are at higher altitude: the Khardung La pass leading to the Nubra valley is at an elevation of 5,602 metres, the altitude of Pangong lake is 4,250 metres and Tso Moriri lake lies at a height of 4,530 metres. You can travel to these places only when you are properly acclimatized to the altitude. Oxygen tank is very important while travelling at such places in ladakh.

How to plan a trip to Ladakh with altitude & acclimatization?

1. Visit Leh city, the Indus valley and the Sham region at the beginning of your trip in Ladakh. These places lie at an altitude between 2,700 and 3,700 metres and you can travel around there during acclimatization time.
2. Go to the Nubra valley after minimum 2 days of acclimatization. Even though Khardung La pass is at very high altitude (5,602 metres), you will only spend a short time at this elevation and you will be back to a lower altitude when you reach the Nubra valley (3,150 metres).
3. Travel to Pangong lake (4,250 metres) after minimum 3 or 4 days of acclimatization. Note that suffering from AMS there can be critical because there is no easy way to drive to lower altitude, you would need to go through Chang La pass (5,360 metres) to get back to Leh.
4. Visit Tso Moriri lake (4,530 metres) after minimum 4 days of acclimatization.

Mountaineering in Ladakh

There are plenty of mountain peaks (Kangri) in Ladakh above 6000m falling in the various ranges i.e. Karakoram, Ladakh, Zangskar and the Great Himalayas. There are different fee strucrure for climbing peaks from IMF (www.indmount.org). Trekking peaks are cheaper e.g. Stok Kangri.

Stok Kangri(6153m) is one of the most easily accessible peaks around Leh. Its streaked white massif is quite visible from Leh Town. Stok is a part of Zangskar Mountain range. It is one of the few peaks in the world, above 6000m, that can be climbed without specialised traning and too much pf technical equepment.

It can be scaled in flat 4 days with suitable guide. Rock climbing is also an upcoming sports, althrough plenty of scope, but there are just a few tour opreators to deal.
